Introduction:
Bright red nose, black thorax with yellow red markings, brown abdomen.
Identification:
Thorax is black with yellow red patches particularly around the eyes and its nose (clypeus) is red with some orange brown at its base. Its abdomen is brown to black. Body colour and markings vary depending on geographic location. Body size up to 6cm
Max. Size: 6 cm.
Distribution: eastern Australia
Habitat: Dry sclerophyll forest, open forest and temperate heathland with Eucalyptus spp. and Corymbia spp.
Biology:
Populations vary considerably from year to year. Sometimes they are abundant and other times they can be scarce or absent for several years. It can be a common cicada in the Sydney region during late November and December. Nymphs live in the ground and feed on sap from tree roots, adults are free living in trees. It calls from the upper branches of eucalypts from dawn till dusk but can always be heard at dusk. It call is a regular ringing rattle-like trill sound that occurs during the day and at sunset. It's common name comes from its reddish-brown "nose" (clypeus)
