This wooden headrest is a 'rocking' type, possibly from the Huon Gulf of Papua New Guinea. Headrests help protect ritual hair styles while sleeping, as well as being more practical than pillows in tropical jungles. Some headrests were decorated with carvings that represented spiritual beings that protected the sleeper. In 1917 the Museum purchased this headrest from Colonel John Stacey, an American entrepreneur.
