Carved wooden mortar from the village of Boroi in the Madang Province on the northeast coast of Papua New Guinea. It was registered as a betel nut mortar. Betel nut (buai) is chewed throughout the South Pacific as a mild stimulant and to suppress hunger. The mortar was collected in 1986 in Port Moresby by members of the Australian Museum's Sepik Documentation Project who documented the museum's lower Sepik collection of artifacts and studied changes in coastal trade between villages.
