This wooden headrest is attributed to the East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea. Headrests help protect ritual hair styles while sleeping, as well as being more practical than pillows in tropical jungles. Some headrests were decorated with carvings that represented spiritual beings that protected the sleeper. This headrest was donated to the Museum in 1990 by Mrs Jean Moriarty, the widow of Mr Stanley Moriarty, a Sydney collector of Melanesian artefacts.
