- This intricately carved hoe or paddle was possibly produced as a gift to celebrate the launching of a vessel, or acknowledging someone of importance. The paddle has all the hallmarks of a fine carver which includes whakarare, niho taniwha and other carving elements. The eyes have been inlaid with paua shell, or haliotis iris to provide mystique to the paddle. This was donated to the Australian Museum in 1951 as part of the extensive Sir William Dixson collection.
