Such models are the product of early carvers who wanted to establish themselves as proficient in their chosen field, carving. Normally produced in high tourist areas such as Rotorua NZ in the early 20th century, model waka were popular items to own as they were significantly smaller in scale to that of the sea faring waka, however demonstrated artistic flair by including motifs and characters often reserved for more extravagant works. This model in particular is unique as there are small figures carved in to the hull, which may lend to the narrative of Maui fishing up the North Island of New Zealand. Very little is known about the history of this model canoe, the museum records suggest that the Museum acquired this in 1911.
