This carved wooden headrest was collected in Bin village in Papua New Guinea's West Sepik Province in the 1930s by the Divine Word Missionaries of the Marienberg Mission. Headrests help protect ritual hair styles while sleeping, as well as being more practical than pillows in tropical jungles. Some headrests are decorated with carvings that represent spiritual beings that protect the sleeper. The Museum bought this headrest from Mr Ed Boylan in 1987.
