- This wooden turmeric oven (taonga or umu renga) is used to bake turmeric. Turmeric has a number of uses including dyeing tapa cloths and colouring and flavouring food. The oven was collected by Professor Raymond Firth in 1928-29 on Tikopia Island in the Temotu Province of the Solomon Islands. Professor Firth commented that it was a "Fine specimen both in finish and design. The workmanship of these varies considerably and specimens are valued ….. according to the volume and finish of their interior." In 1991 the University of Sydney donated the oven to the Museum.
