canoe model
- Summary:
- PUN1152 - 8/8/1989, canoe model, Port Moresby, National Capital Division, Central Province, Papua New Guinea, Pacific
- Item Name:
- canoe model
- Label:
- This is a model of a Lakatoi vessel attributed to the Port Moresby area in Papua New Guinea. Lakatoi canoes were constructed for the annual Hiri voyaging trips that occurred between the Gulf of Papua and the Motu speaking people from around Port Moresby. It was a trading system whereby they traded clay pots for packets of sago and other valuables, but ceased to be undertaken after WWII. Some canoe models were built to ensure the detailed design of a full-sized vessel was not forgotten. It is not known when the Museum acquired the model, although it was certainly before 1988.
