- This canoe model is attributed to San Cristobal Island in the Solomon Islands. The small carved dog on the stern is typical of canoes used to catch bonitos. The teeth of a dog, porpoise or fruit bat were often hidden in the canoe to ensure its fishing success. The model was donated to the Museum in 1928 by Mr Gustavus Waterhouse who visited Pacific Island countries on several occasions.
