This old stone mortar (mena imbunda kana) was collected from the Kyaka Enga people on the northern slopes of Mt. Hagen in Papua New Guinea. According to its owner it had been used for pig divining. It may originally have been used to crush food plants, including seeds, nut kernels, yams and taro. Few stone mortars and pestles were being made at the time of European contact. The mortar was collected in 1955 by Professor Bulmer of the Australian National University in Canberra and donated by him to the Museum in 1965.
