This spoon (mavaka) was collected in 1983 in the (now abandoned) Kavava village in the Ihu Sub-province of Papua New Guinea's Gulf Province. Its owner said it was made by his grandfather, probably in the 1930s, and used to stir and ladle pig meat stew, sago balls (poi kari) and soup. Dr James Rhoads bought the spoon in 1983 while working on the Australian Museum's Gulf Documentation Project.
