A wooden canoe ornament decorated with geometric designs and the remnants of coloured paint. It was said to be tied to the prow of a canoe for magical purposes. It was probably traded from the Trobriand Islands, Papua New Guinea and was collected in Torres Strait in about 1887. It was then presented to the Museum by the Reverend S. jElla in 1898. One of two wooden, egg-shaped canoe ornaments with incised carving on both sides of each, remnants of coloured paint infill remaining. They are said to be tied to the prow of a canoe for magical purposes. They were probably traded from the Trobriand Islands in Papua New Guinea. They were collected in about 1877 and presented by the Reverend S. Ella in 1898. (11x8.0cms.)
